Luke Miller // Yax Tun Minerals and Custom Cut Jadeite for Xunantunich Wayo'ob Project
Luke Miller is a co founder of Yax Tun Minerals and is based out of San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico. Specializing in ethically sourced, mine direct jadeite from the historic Motagua Valley in Guatemala, we teamed up with Luke to fill the very specific need for jadeite eyes for the Chaak pendants. Not only was he able to track down some of the finest jadeite that Guatemala has to offer, but he was able to have his workshop cut it to our specific measurements and even better, it was from the same place that the ancient Maya used to harvest jade.
Historically, jade had the highest value out of any other mineral and as such was used but the kinds and queens. Jade was viewed as having a direct connection to the spirit realms so using it as the eyes for the God of Thunder, Chaak, was a no brainer and really tied the whole line together. And in the modern day, the types of jadeite used in this project are of the top quality that this locality has to offer. It was no small task to find and cut these beautiful stones and as you can see the combination is exactly what this project needed.
