Jorge Castellanos // Slate Carver // Xunantunich Wayo’ob project
Jorge Castellanos has been carving slate for over 20 years and built his workshop on a hilltop that looks directly at the archaeological site of Xunantunich in the town of San Jose Succotz, Belize. He has been collecting his slate from the heart of the Maya Mountains since his carving began and now uses his art to help educate others on the history of the Maya using the important works he reproduces. Blending is own style and techniques with images reaching thousands of years into the past, Jorge opens the doorway and discussion to a time in the distant past. But a time that still has a very real presence in the modern day.
Working with Jorge on this project was fluid, fun, educational, exciting and totally an honor. Not only is our work ethic the same but we shared the same excitement of watching this project come together. Due to life circumstances and the the difficulty of developing, executing, producing and finishing a series like this, it took little over a year and a half to get to the finish line and during that time, this collaboration went from one between artists, to one between brothers.
